Aussie, Aussie, Aussie
Last year’s Flight Centre Half Marathon winner Martin Dent stuck to his race plan in the Olympic marathon on Sunday and finished 28th in 2:16.29. Dent ran the second half five seconds quicker than his first 21.1km. Former Coffee Club 10km Michael Shelley adopted a similar policy and ran almost identical splits as he moved through the field to finish 16th in 2:14.10.

Cheaper by the dozen
Western Australia is sending a strong team of six men and six women to contest this year’s Medibank Melbourne Marathon, which doubles as the Australian title and also the world championship selection trial. The squad is headed by Perth’s Lauren Shelley, who was eighth in the Osaka Marathon in a time of 2:35.57 in January and fourth in the Nagano Marathon (2:37.13) in April. Kevin Matthews (Big Kev) heads the men’s squad. Last year he wore the No.13 race bib and led the race for the first 200m and still ran a PB of 2:45.40.

Surf’s up
Victoria’s Liam Adams won his second consecutive City to Surf in Sydney on the weekend in a time of 41.31, while Lara Tamsett was first woman in 46.55 in windy conditions. Both winners are heading to Bulgaria for the world half marathon titles in October. Clare Geraghty, who made her marathon debut in Melbourne last year, was second female in 48.55, and plans to run the Flight Centre Half this year.

Did you know?
Channel 9 Olympics commentator Tony Jones has been a regular feature in the Flight Centre Half Marathon and last year completed the course in 1:54.22. He plans to again run the 21.1km event this year.
