The Melbourne Runner

ANY DISTANCE IS POSSIBLE

The 36th Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival is on Sunday October 13 and early indications are that it will be our biggest one yet. Already more than 2,500 runners have committed to the 42.2km race and we expect The Flight Centre Half Marathon to reach its 11,000 entry limit before the close of Early Birds on June 24. For those of you who don't have time to train for such long races, there's also The Coffee Club 10km and the ASICS 5.7km Run and 3km walk events. All events finish inside the MCG.

  Happy Running

Running provides many benefits which allow you to live a longer, healthier and, let's not forget, a happier lifestyle. There is no-need for expensive work out equipment or any special skills, as running only requires a suitable pair of runners and sheer determination. Though running may seem intimidating to some, the fact that it provides and effective workout for your body whilst burning more calories per hour as compared to other forms of exercise, may encourage women to take up the challenge.
Marathons are long distance running events in which anyone can participate in. But it wasn't so long ago that women weren't allowed to participate in marathons or other long distance running events. In the year 1972, the rules of running changed to suit the rights of women, therefore launching the official acceptance of women partaking in marathons. Statistics prove that the number of women completing a marathon since 1972 has significantly increased and in 2012 women made up 30% of the field. This is due to the fact that running is appealing to more and more females, as they are being encouraged to have a go!
The Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival in 2013 is an event women should take into consideration. There is a distance for everyone including the iconic Marathon (42.4km). Completion of the marathon becomes evidence to yourself and others that determination can prove that Anything is Possible.
I believe that Anything is Possible

Former Ballarat Lady Miners basketball star Tracie Kaye pulled off a huge upset when she beat NSW's Madga Karimali-Poulis to win the Great Ocean Road Marathon two weeks ago. Kaye, who retired from basketball because of back issues, clocked 3:08:44 for the 45km course and now plans to break three hours for the first time in this year's Medibank Melbourne Marathon.

TRAINING

Progressively increase your training distances. It's advisable to do one long run at least once each fortnight, to the point that you have completed a single session totalling 25-35 km in the month before the marathon.
