They may not have made the official results, but 130 members of the armed services received Medibank Melbourne Marathon medals when they conducted their own version of the event at the Afghanistan army base in Tarin Kowt.
The run was organised by Royal Australian Air Force Seargent Cassie Fien, a former world half marathon representative, and was held on October 14 and offered similar distances – 5.7km, 10km, 21.1km and the marathon.
Over the 4 events, the following times were achieved:
5.7km - Male 25min10 / Female 28min 47
10km - Male 45min06 / Female 55min21
Half Marathon - Male 1h35min / Female 1h40min
Marathon - Male 3h41min / Female 4h35min
The course, as this picture of Fien measuring shows, was vastly different!
