The Melbourne Runner
The official E-newsletter of the 2012 Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival

Make it a perfect 10
There's only 10 more weeks to go before this year’s 35th Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival on Sunday October 14. While we are on track for a record field in the marathon, we are getting close to reaching our field limit in both The Flight Centre Half Marathon and The Coffee Club 10km, so make sure you get your entry in ASAP or you may miss out. If 10km is too far, then the Asics 5.7km run and 3km walk event may be just the thing for you.

Active Feet
Concerned your shoes may not make the distance? The Podiatry trained staff at active feet conduct free shoe checks and gait analysis in store to ensure you are in the correct shoe for your training and race day. 10 weeks out, NOW is the perfect time to be transitioning in to a new shoe if required.  Changing your footwear too close to race day can lead to discomfort and injury, the best way to avoid this is by giving your body enough time to adapt to your shoe. Active feet are offering all Melbourne Marathon festival entrants $30 off any footwear purchase, simply print out the attached voucher and redeem in store.

Marathon Sunday
While Australia can be proud of the efforts of Lisa-Jane Weightman, Jessica Trengove and Benita Willis in London, a record 428 runners completed the Brisbane Marathon on Sunday.
While Queensland veteran Ralf Hamman was  first home in 2:43.53, former Melbourne Marathon entrant Sandi Rabie won the women's event in 3:12.04.

Did you know
Former Sale of the Century host Tony Barber ran the Melbourne Marathon in 1983 in a creditable time of 3:22.41.

MEDIBANK HEALTHY TIP

TRAINING - Drink on the run. It might sound strange but it’s important you practise this. You will need to take in fluid every 5km throughout the race and it is not easy to drink enough while you are on the move. Also try out a variety of carbohydrate-based drinks to work out what is best for you.
