Entries for this year’s Melbourne Marathon Festival on Sunday October 14 opened on May 7 and early signs are that it will be another bumper year as the running boom continues. So far 1500 have entered the marathon and taken up the cheaper Early Bird option, which saves you $20. If you don’t feel you can make 42.2km, then there’s also the Flight Centre Half Marathon, The Coffee Club 10km, plus an Asics 5.7km run and 3km walk event.
Something to singlet about
All runners in this year’s marathon will receive a special 35th anniversary Singlet as part of their race entry. Collection of the top can only be done by presenting your race bib at the Race Expo at the MCG during race week.

Shades of Peter Pan
At 69, Pete Battrick is the oldest of the 10 remaining Spartan Legends who have completed all 34 Melbourne Marathons but he is still going strong. For the past 40 years he has not missed an Athletics Victoria race for his club Oakleigh and he was a proud finisher in the Victorian 10km title on Saturday at Flemington in 58min34sec. Box Hill youngster Harry Summers won the race in 29.37, while Lisa Weightman tuned up for the London marathon to be first female with a slick 33.17.
